Are Wheelie Bins Better For The Wolrd

By:

The wheelie bin may look humble to the casual observer, but in truth it makes a significant contribution to the quality of life in the modern world. Given the enormous volume of refuse that must be transported from source to destination, anything that can make the task easier, either on an individual or community level, is certainly a good thing.

Growing with the process of urbanisation was the need for standardisation in waste conatiners and then mobile waste containers. That need was first addressed in the 1930s when George Dempster invented the original Dempster Dumpster, a mobile steel waste container designed to be mechanically emptied into a larger dustbin.

The design improved in the fifties with the invention of modified vehicles and containers with a lifting mechanism and containers to fit, allowing for a smooth lifting and dumping operation without the need for human manhandeling. The familiar dumpster, still in use today, but were only concidered mobile for a truck that could actually lift them. Bins that could be wheeled by a single individual would take a few more years to appear.

The Seventies saw the wheelie bins appearance on the neighberhood stage and then like aliens the invasion began. This was just the thing for the smaller jobs of our waste-producing society, a container of standardized shape and size with a swinging lid, wheels and a handle in back for easy pushing.

The wheelie bins used today are made from a blend of virgin and recycled plastic that is extremely tough and unlikely to be penetrated even by sharp, very heavy objects. This fact together with snap lids makes for an injury free transfer from objects that would hang out of old style bins. Because of this, wheelie bins can be considered a safety measure as well as a convenient method of refuse disposal.

A wheelie bin is a barrier between the user and any hazardous materials that may be inside. A properly manufactured wheelie bin should be water tight and capable of carrying liquid when necessary. This allows the containment of watery waste as well as some of the chemicals produced by industry. While some waste is so hazardous as to require further measures for disposal, the wheelie bin can contain a great many smelly, greasy things and allow their safe transport.

A wheelie bin is part of a full waste management system, and must fit into its proper place. With this in mind, the design looked at the bin being reinforced on the front lip that could be lifted by hoist. The wheeled bin can be rolled or wheeled, dependant on your bin day shuffle and just left on the pavement for the refuse truck.

A triumph in technology might sounf a little overboard for the wheelie bin, but they have made our streets, communities and cities a little more cleaner and pleasant.
