Are We Missing The Opportunity With The Stimulus Package?

Right now various levels of government are in talks with the automobile sector attempting to keep it going. After all, too many jobs are at stake to allow them to fail.

Are they missing the something?

Everyone is aware that automobiles are more inefficient and more destructive to the environment than municipal transit so why is it that people are still employing them?

Here are two central reasons:

Convenience: Public transit is not as convenient as a personal car. With Public transportation I have to adjust my timetable to fit that of the transit system. I dont have the independence to travel as effortlessly as in a car. Additionally, a trip on Public transit often requires more time than in a car.

Image: Most of the time the auto manufactures are not promoting transportation. That may seem wrong, but if you watch their promotions judiciously you will realize that they are selling an appearance. Almost none of the commercials are about how a car can transport you. They are about how the car will make you feel and how your family will admire you.

We all know that we have to make some alterations in our culture for our natural environment. We are trying to get individuals to make those changes by promoting Municipal transit. We are currently faced with a chance the automobile manufactures are failing. We could take advantage, but we just do not posses enough courage to make the changes.

We rationalize that we must protect investments and jobs so we prop up an environmentally destructive method of transportation because of political expediency. Keep in mind that any government that allows that many individuals to become unemployed would definitely lose the next election.

But as is often the circumstances, it doesnt have to be a one side or the other mindset we can make choices, change our approach, and make enhancements for the economy and the environment.

What if use the financial stimulus destined for the auto manufactures for municipal transportation developments instead? What if we enhanced public transit so that it did become expedient and comfortable? What if we aided the auto sector staff apply their existing skill sets to these new projects?

What if we used the companies that build cars and parts to make municipal transportation beneficial rather than supporting them so they can market their products as an image?

We have a chance for change here. Why are we continuing to force effort into an business that harms our environment and is proving itself to be economically impractical? I recommend it is because of politics but Ive never seen politics care for the environment.
