Are We Falling Out Of Love With Holidaying Abroad?

By:

But these dramatic figures were skewed by the fact that the biggest contributor to the overall decline was business travel, hard hit by the worldwide economic downturn.

So does this indicate that the days of the foreign holiday are numbered? Certainly not!
The Office for National Statistics suggests that the downward trend bottomed out towards the end of 2009. In the last quarter of the year, it said 14.3 million of us travelled abroad, and despite the recession, we only slightly tightened our purse strings, spending a near-negligible 1 per cent less or 7.8billion pounds still an undoubtedly welcome boost to the coffers of shops, cafes, bars etc in our favourite destinations.

In the 12 months to November 2009. Visits by UK residents to:

1.Europe decreased by 15 per cent from 54.8 million to 46.5 million
2.North America decreased by 20 per cent from 4.7 million to 3.7 million, and
3.other parts of the world decreased by 11 per cent from 10.0 million to 8.9 million

That all adds up to more than 10 million fewer holidays and breaks taken abroad by UK residents a trend which, if it continues, could have some appreciable effects on some of our favourite holiday destinations.

But of course, nowhere which relies on tourism for a good proportion of its income and that has to apply to any number of places nowadays wants to see that happen. The result is that resorts and attractions the world over are constantly seeking to add to their repertoire of attractions, and broaden their appeal. And while very few would take such drastic measures as completely re-inventing themselves, it does mean that the best of our old favourites work hard to keep their magic alive.

The key question we must all ask is how far this is a cyclical phenomenon, or how far it represents a fundamental change in British habits. And to what extent can the holiday destinations which have climbed to the top of the popularity charts as a result of the strength of the euro such as Turkey, Croatia and Morocco - retain their positions once people start saying "been there, seen it, got the T-shirt"?

As far as us discovering our wanderlust is concerned, the genie is definitely out of the bottle. There's no doubt that our holidays mean as much if not more to us than they ever have. So as long as that demand exists, there'll always be places, new and old, vying for our attention. And when you think about it, how lucky does that make us?
