Are There Charges For Cancelled Pickups?

By:

Anyone that has dealt with a courier company for any amount of time knows that it seems like there is a fee or a surcharge for almost everything that you do with the company. Cancelled pickups are no exception. Your Kansas City courier service does likely have a fee that they will bill to your account every time that you cancel a pickup. The amount of that fee can differ from company to company, and some companies will even have a scale that can make the fee differ from order to order.

The reason that you are typically charged when you cancel a pickup is because of the disruption that you cause to the courier company's business. When you originally have your order placed, whether it's a special pickup request or a standing scheduled delivery order, they plan a driver's routes around making that pickup. They fit many pickups together in order to create the most efficient route possible.

When you cancel that pickup, they immediately have to assign someone to quickly look at the driver's dispatches for the day and see if they're still efficient or if they need to be re-ordered or reassigned now that your address has been taken out of the equation. This costs the courier company time and money, and since it was your service that caused the disruption, it is you that they bill for the delay.

The best thing that you can do when you realize that you have to cancel a scheduled pickup is to call the courier company immediately. The longer notice you give them, the less of an inconvenience the cancellation is going to be to them. In fact, some courier companies will actually reduce, or even wave, the cancellation fee if you give them ample notice. If you cancel within 24 hours of when your pickup was scheduled though, almost every courier company in the country will charge you at least some fee for that cancellation.

Try and stay ahead of any cancellations by having someone review your shipping orders on a regular basis. Hopefully you can catch any required cancellations sooner rather than later. There are unfortunately going to be some last minute cancellations which are unavoidable, usually due to a customer canceling their order with you. As long as you remember to call the courier as soon as possible though, the fees shouldn't mount too quickly, and should be within an acceptable cost range.
