Are Teeth Bleaching Kiosks Really Safe And Effective?

By:

You can find them in malls all over Southern California. Many kiosks like those recently opened at malls in Santa Ana, Brea and Westminster offer satisfaction guaranteed. Some consumers say they are happy with the results, while others are unimpressed, and Orange County dentist offices are skeptical at best.

The booming teeth whitening market has yielded a plethora of products ranging from those you can find in a grocery store to those you can choose from a professional and local Mission Viejo cosmetic dentist. The mid-range teeth bleaching kiosks such as iSmile, BriteSmile, or Pearl-Brite however, have been met with some disapproval by the American Dental Association (ADA). The ADA has concerns about the associated safety and efficacy of such teeth bleaching products and services offered by these kiosks.

Because the aforementioned kiosks are not affiliated with dental practices, and the employees providing treatment are not dentists, the ADA argues that there could be some safety issues and is particularly concerned with what they consider to be the practice of dentistry without a license. The bleaching agents used at mall kiosks are significantly less concentrated than those used by a local Fullerton cosmetic dentist. Even the light used in conjunction with kiosk whitening is little more than a flashlight bulb; as opposed to the more advanced UV lighting systems used in-office. Most importantly, kiosk whitening is a self-administered treatment. Employees do not touch their clients mouths; meaning that the service performed is little more than supervised at-home whitening treatments.

Another concern of the ADA is patient screening process. There are no regulations as to who may or may not be good candidates for bleaching. Therefore, the treatment performed on the wrong person could have oral health consequences, including Technicolor or mismatched teeth and severe tooth sensitivity.

Professional teeth whitening performed by a cosmetic dentist costs $500 to $650 on average. Bleaching performed at mall kiosks ranges from $50 to $100 on average while do-it-yourself whitening kits can cost $30 to $70.Consult with your local dentist or Orange County cosmetic dentist before undergoing any oral treatment.
