Are Reebok Easytone Trainers Better Than Exercise?

By:

Hamstrings, calves and buttock muscles are worked up to 30% more than with regular trainers with their range of Easytone trainers, claim Reebok. But are these claims in danger of suggesting that the new footwear is better than exercise?

Reebok developed the EasyTone range with a convex sole and air filled pods which create instability and force the foot to balance on a smaller surface area than usual. The body compensates for this imbalance by activating the lower body muscles on a small scale. The trainers are a fun way to improve muscle strength, increase stamina, condition the body and get better muscle definition.

The concept seems too good to be true, as even light exercise such as walking is claimed to give your legs and bum get a workout that would usually take hours at the gym. A team of scientists with expertise in exercise, sport and physiology at the University of Wisconsin conducted a study to test the claims on each of the shoes. The results declared a degree of toning of the legs and bum. But the team struggled to determine whether the toning was entirely due to the imbalance the shoes created or the subjects' motivation to walk more.

Common sense tells us that a shoe alone cannot dramatically change your muscle definition or body shape. Weight loss or toning can only be achieved through exercise and this remains an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Now that we've established the Reebok Easytone should not be used as an alternative to exercise, we can look at the benefits of the shoes. They are a great addition to a healthy lifestyle and can tone your legs and bum through simple exercises like walking around the house, walking the dog and going shopping, so it is worth wearing them as much as you can.
