Are Preowned Cars More Dangerous?

By:

In this world of full disclosure, the dangers that seem to have haunted used car buyers seem to have vanished. Although there are still some risks in buying a preowned car most of these can be avoided with a bit of research.

Risk #1: Damage as a Result of an Accident

By law, dealers are required to disclose to you any previous accident or issue that they are aware of. In addition, for a small cost you have the option of conducting your own vehicle history report on the pre owned car. This report will disclose any previous accidents that have been reported. It will also disclose the accurate odometer rating and any other major issues that have been noted.

Risk #2: Vehicle issues are no longer covered by warranty.

A standard vehicle warranty covers any major vehicle issues for the first 3 years and/or 60000 kilometres. This being said, most preowned cars are no longer covered. However; that does not leave the buyer without any options. Any reoccurring vehicle concern should be noted in the maintenance record. If this is the case, ask the dealer for some form of guarantee that should this issue reoccur, the dealership will absorb the cost. In addition, it might be worthwhile to invest in a used vehicle warranty plan. Talk to you dealership to see which options are available and if there is a plan that meets your needs.

Risk #3: Inflated selling price

Dealers are in the pre owned car industry to make money. They will try to sell the vehicle for the highest price that they can. Do not be afraid to negotiate for a lower price. Research the specific model/odometer rating on the internet and see what the average asking price is. With a bit of comparison shopping: you can be certain that you are getting the best deal for your preowned car.

Risk #4:Stolen Vehicle

A vehicle history report will quickly disclose if the vehicle has been stolen and if the title is free and clear. If the report does state this, do not purchase the car. Make sure that the title is free and clear before you sign the contract and finalize your deal.

In today's market, buying a pre owned car is a fairly safe venture. Take the time to research both the market and the specific vehicle. Make certain that you have the full history of the vehicle and any concerns have been addressed before finalizing the purchase.
