Are My Article Submissions Competing With Each Other In Google

By:

I love answering the fantastic questions that readers send to me. Here is an interesting one about how the big search engines treat article submissions that appear on multiple websites on the internet:

"If my article is republished multiple times on the internet (as I sincerely hope it will be!), could it end up competing with itself in Google's rankings? How does duplicate content play into this situation? Can it help if I did create many versions of the same article?"

All of those are excellent questions - let's go through them one by one:

1 - Will your submissions "compete" with each other in the Google rankings?

Each time you submit your article, there are two things that you want to rank highly for:

Should you choose to target a long tail keyword phrase (that's a non-competitive phrase that is three or more words long) in the article body, as is recommended, then you want at least one of your articles to list high in the search engine rankings when someone types that same long tail phrase into Google.

Should you be targeting the main keyword phrase in the HTML resource box, as is recommended, then you want your website to rank extremely highly for this particular competitive phrase.

Ok so, you want the article to rank highly for the long tail keyword phrase and the relevant website to rank highly for the more popular, competitive phrase.

The specific question that this reader has asked is referring to the former scenario where you want an article to rank well for a long tail keyword term.

Let's assume you are concentrating on a long tail keyword phrase in your article copy, then it doesn't matter much that you have multiple variations of that same article floating around on the worldwide web. So long as a minimum of one of the articles shows up for that specific term, then you have done it.

2 - How does duplicate content affect this scenario of having articles republished on many websites?

Now here's something you just might not have understood - duplicate content is a normal part of any article marketing exercise.

Think about it - you put an article on an article directory as a "free reprint article". Publishers will then go to these directories and find articles that they republish on their very own websites.

Let's assume your article is relevant, then it should be republished. Never forget, republication is your aim.

Could it "affect" your site when you have duplicate content?

Definitely not - Google will not punish authors for utilising article marketing campaigns. Free reprint articles are thought of as syndicated content, and that content plays a vital and commonly accepted role on the worldwide web.

However, that does not necessarily mean that when readers do a search for terms connected to your articles that Google has to include ever occurence of your articles on the list. Google will be likely to just include a few websites that have that same article in the search engine results lists. The other occurrences of that article are placed into Google's supplemental index.

3 - Can writing multiple versions of an article help?

Yes it does. Each time you you submit different versions of an article to each of the directories that you submit to, you are building the numbers of unique articles on the internet. Every link that is produced will tend to count higher because it's coming from content that's different from content found on other sites.

To recap, these are the lessons for you to take from this article:

=> Article marketing is definitely on the up and up. This is a tool that helps your site get a higher ranking within Google.

=> The target with an article marketing campaign is to have your submissions republished as many times as possible. Do not be afraid to submit your content to many sites or to have articles republished.

=> Producing many article versions gives you the possibility of much more linking power. Change the title, the resource box, and parts of the article body. Create as many high quality variations as you can manage, and then submit only one version of your article to each directory that you submit to.
