Are Martial Arts Gradings Required?

By:

Most Martial Arts lessons have some type of grading system. This enables students to win a visible sign of progression, typically in the form of a new belt or sash. Customarily, the grading is a tough test with pupils having to establish a technique standard needed to go up a notch.

The grading test is regularly an incredibly gratifying, but challenging, day, while some do fail, typically they shouldn't as they won't be put forward for the grading unless they're prepared. Clearly, there's no point attempting your black belt if you're only a blue belt standard. You will merely be out of your depth. Certain Martial Arts schools simply award a new grade to their pupils when the tutor considers they've obtained a suitable level. While students miss out on the grading day itself this method stops the clamor for a new belt that students will sometimes believe is due them.

Often pupils feel that merely because they've turned up for the specified number of classes they're due their grading. While that may be agreeable at some of the more money oriented Martial Arts schools it is not so in lessons where the trainer cares about your promotion. After all the belt is really only there to keep the uniform tidy, the color is of no value if it is simply handed over regardless of a persons ability.

The easiest way to tell whether a given Martial Arts school makes it's students receive their belts or not is to take a look at the standard of their black belts. If they are no good the school is probably not worth investing your time and effort in. If they are good it's well worth giving the place a go. Good black belt standard equals tough grading and high technique levels. Of course, it is also a great indication of the coaches ability, if you keep at it you too could be as good as the black belts, one day. Not everyone is capable of passing on their technique to pupils and that holds true for ex-World Champions, winning does not always translate into teaching!

The grading system of good Martial Arts schools will have value, you will have to attain your belts but if the coach is incompetent it will be all the more difficult to do so. But you need to take responsibility of yourself, you should prepare successfully for your gradings. Ensure you put in the hours, practice, practice, practice, do not leave anything to chance!
