Are Low Cost Domain Names Any Good?

By:

Companies offering cheap domain names are popping up all over the internet. Many people are choosing to build their own web sites. Low cost domains make it simple for more regular people to build their own website.

Many lay persons don't know how to building sites off of other sites even though it is considered to be the most cost effective way to go. With hundreds of low cost domain names out there, you can still have your own domain name without risking your credibility.

There are a couple things that you may need to think about before buying low cost, cheap or free domain names.

There are two levels of domain names, top level and second level.

1. Top level domain names are broke down into www.yourdomainname of the site, followed by.com, .org, .co ect.

2. Second level domains are broke down by the name of the site, followed by www.com, followed by the name of the next level provider. Here is an example of a second level domain;

www.yourdomainname.com/yourprovidername.com. What happens is that when a site is hosted by a service provider both parties share the domain name. The owner is in the first part of the address, while the provider is in the ending address following the .com.

Really there isn't a problem with this type of domain name except for the fact of the stigma that is sometimes placed on second level domains. Another draw back is that some cheap to free domain name hosting companies require you to sign up for a hosting plan in order to get your cheap prices. This is not always a bad thing though, if you get the domain name at a cheap or free price along with the domain hosting, you may have just saved yourself some time and we all know that time is money!

Tips for buying domain names:

1. Keep your domain name short so that way it will be easy to remember, catchy is always better

2. Make sure to use keywords relevant to your product or service

3. Try to always use .com as the extension

4. Check for domain name availability: This is where a service provider can help you and make sure you are aware of any important keywords that may be an option

5. Keep a list of alternate domain names in the case your first choice is already taken

Many times domain name registration service providers can keep you in the loop on what domain name seems to be more popular over others.

Determining the value of a domain name is the tricky part. This should be your first step to determine if you are getting a low cost domain name or not.

Once you have settled on your domain name, add in all the other costs and services that maybe offered. Tally in what you really need to use opposed to what you need to pay for. Many times domain name service providers will let you custom your package to suit your needs.
