Are Dect Cordless Phones Dangerous Or Unhealthy?

By:

There are many rumours and rumblings about the dangers associated with DECT cordless phones. This is often the only technology available on cordless units today, but DECT (or Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology) certainly offers better service and reliability than older, less advanced models. The question of whether this technology also offers dangers to the user still stands.

DECT cordless phones emit EMTS (or Electromagnetic Fields). EMTs will be emitted from the handset only during a phone call, whereas these emissions occur constantly from the base. But it is important to note that in both cases the level of emissions is much lower than recommended levels.

EMTs From the Handset
Because EMTs are emitted during a phone call, its a good idea to limit the cordless phone use to shorter calls. Some corded models also utilize DECT and so will produce similar levels of emission, but if you have an alternatively designed corded model use that for longer calls.

No matter where you are in the house it is easy to keep the handset close by. As long as it is laid into the base for a recharge once a day you can count on dependable operation. By installing the base in an out of the way location and having only the handset out during busy times you can also cut down on unnecessary EMTs.

It is important to note that the emissions from the handset are 40 times lower than the recommended limit, as reported by the Federal Office of Public Health for Switzerland.

EMTs From the Base
Emissions from the base of DECT cordless phones are released constantly. That is because the unit is prepared to receive a call at any time. These consistent emissions could pose a risk if the base is set up close by a lounge area, such as the parlour or family room. Its a good idea to plug in the base away from these areas.

Although it has not been proven that exposure to EMFs from DECT phones is harmful or dangerous, there are ways to reduce your exposure just in case. Setting up the base in an area at least 1m from sofas, chairs or gathering places is a good idea. There are also low radiation models available for purchase in specialty stores these models are designed to reduce or eliminate the EMTs emitted during certain circumstances.

Even when a person is very close to the base (within 20cm), the emissions are still 25 times lower than the recommended limits. When that distance is lengthened to 1m, the emissions are around 100 times less than those recommended levels.

About the Author:
Powerful and reliable, DECT cordless phones have not been designated as a danger. You can practice safety precautions during use to reduce exposure to EMFs, but even during normal operations the levels are well below levels that could be deemed as a risk, phones such as BT phones are perfectly suitable for use in the home and are safe to use frequently.
