Are Courier Drivers Paid On Commission?

By:

Miami courier services drivers do not regularly get paid on a commission basis. Commission based pay is almost wholly reserved to sales personnel. It gives sales people an incentive to sell more products, because their pay is based on how much they sell. This kind of pay structure does not usually work with courier drivers because they usually are not involved in sales. Their job is to get the goods from one place to another safely and on time. Generating revenue is not in their job description,

This does not mean that drivers are not compensated to performing their duties above expectations. Most courier companies have a bonus structure in place that rewards their best performers. Drivers who repeatedly make their pickups and deliveries early or on time are valuable employees. Companies will reward these employees to keep them loyal and happy. Workers who feel appreciated and respected by their employers tend to stay with that employer on a long term basis. Performance based bonuses are a way for courier service companies to provide and incentive for their drivers to perform their jobs at a high level.

There is a small subset of drivers who do receive commissions. These are drivers who double as delivery people and sales representatives. Beer delivery drivers, for example, are often paid partly on a commission basis. The businesses that they service will usually place an order at least once a week. When the drivers' trucks are loaded, the beer company will usually put extra cases or kegs of beer on the truck. The drives will then attempt to sell these extra cases or kegs on their routes. They do this by offering volume discounts. For example, a bar might order two kegs of a certain beer, but there is a discount for three keg orders. The driver can attempt to sell that third keg, saving the customer money while increasing sales. Because of the increase in sales, that driver will usually receive a commission on that sale.

Commissions are not how Miami courier services drivers earn their pay. They are paid either a salary or an hourly wage rate for driving and making deliveries. Drivers who actually participate in the selling process might receive a commission for any sales that they generate themselves. But for the most part, courier drivers are paid a steady wage for the work that they do, with a chance for a bonus for high achievement.
