Modern computer technology has permitted the development of new video game breakthroughs. This allowed the further creation of multiple varieties in the video game industry. Newer and faster gaming consoles are created each year and there seems to be no end in its continued improvement. The gaming consoles of the new generation include the likes of Sony's PSP, Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's Wii. These consoles have led the way to further innovations when it comes to games. With the aid of new-age graphics technology and hi-definition sounds, gamers are sent to another dimension of gaming. But as we look back at the early beginnings of video games, we cannot deny that the pioneers of these games are the arcade video games.

But when we talk about arcade games, some people think of it as an old fashioned machine that has lost its fame. This is a common misconception by most people.

Arcade video games first gained popularity in the early 1970s, when the technology using solid-state electronics as well as integrated circuits was discovered by arcade games? creators. Since then, video games have pretty much maintained the same format and share the same qualities and traits as they used to back in the day. There have been more and more games released since those days. However, the actual video game machines in arcade format have managed to stay rather consistent with their original form.

Introduced in the early 1970's, arcade games instantly gained popularity from all sectors of the society. And people just can't get enough of their newly found source of entertainment. Back then, it was only playable on machines that are comprised of custom-made integrated circuits and solid state electronics. Even though new games are made it still used the same format. There have been improvements and innovations but they retained the look and the feel of its classic predecessors. And despite the emergence of the newer consoles, arcade games stay adamant at the top. The reason for this is because arcade video games are played in a different gaming environment than the newer consoles.

While at home, you can play as long as you'd like and not worry about the expense of the game you are playing, arcade games have always been designed to be played in large spaces with several people free to peek over your shoulder at the progress you are making. Tokens or coins must be inserted into the arcade machines in order to play a different level. This is perhaps the biggest and most notable difference between these old school games and the modern-day video game consoles like the Playstation, XBOX, Wii and even personal computers.

It is evident that arcade games has been engraved in the video game culture of the society. After decades of being on the mainstream classic video games are still in demand. We can attribute this to its charisma to gamers who are hooked to the retrospective feel of arcade format games. There are also some who are still caught up in the nostalgia of the these games of the past. But whatever the reason might be, it is almost certain that the Arcade Video Games will still be around for years to come.
