Approaches To Recovery From Addiction

By:

Alcoholics Anonymous was established in 1935 by Bob Smith and Bill Wilson. These are two doctors that have helped change the approach to recovery from addiction. There was rampant substance abuse and both doctors believe that the individuals cannot recover by themselves in suffering this type of addiction. This cannot be eradicated unless it is called to public attention.

Most of these recovery programs follow the step program that was designed by Doctor Smith and Wilson. The program is used whether the addiction is due to the use of cocaine, speed, nicotine, heroin, and any other drugs. In order to be successful in addiction recovery, the patient or addict should be able to admit to themselves that they are helpless.

These addicts are helpless to the addictions and they need a superior power that they can rely on as they struggle against addiction. They must also forgive themselves to make way for complete recovery.
Most of the addicts today are strong, believing that their addiction is emotional and physical in nature and so they are not thinking the need for spiritual intervention. The drug programs try to introduce to the patients to intensive counseling.

Through this intensive counseling, the advocate is going to help the patient understand that they are still of great value to their families and the society despite the addiction.

Addicts usually have a group of friends and once they go back to the real world, they must keep away from destructive friendships and this could be very hard for them. The temptations will be everywhere and the patient is going to struggle hard to fight them. The patient must have the strength to stay away from harmful relationships which could lead them back to their addiction.

Recovery programs have also emphasized on behavior modification. The patient is made to understand that the physical dependency on drugs or any substance starts with an emotional pain. The emotions and attitudes are the roots to addiction. The patient should give importance to their emotions and attitudes.

They must not let these things lead them to the use of drugs or other substances. It is only the patient who can say no to the addiction. These support groups will just guide them in their struggle for new life. If you are determined to stop your addiction, seek immediate help. In many of the cases, you will undergo drug recovery programs which will make use of the program designed by Doctor Smith and Wilson.
