Applicants Give Primary Preference To Gmat

Even as GRE is accepted by few business schools, a new study has found that a majority of MBA applicants still select for GMAT. When asked what they would choose as their top choice if schools would allow either one, 55 percent of survey respondents said they would take the GMAT as against 12 percent. Another 12 percent however said they would mull over taking both the exams.

Majority reported a penchant for GMAT although it was harder of the two exams. Of 300 aspiring MBAs polled in January and February 2010, it was found that 47 percent considered the GMAT to be tougher than the GRE.

The Educational Testing Services (ETS) which owns the GRE are taking efforts to make its exam an appealing option for business school admissions. The test alterations would make the exam more difficult. The announced changes have made GRE more attractive to business schools, making it gain wide acceptance with many competitive MBA programs.

Multiple answer questions in each of the verbal and math sections of the test are incorporated in some of the main changes that are intended for the GRE. Rather than just one, here, test takers select all answers that appropriately apply. Among the verbal section, in the sentence uniformity questions, test takers are called upon to pick out of six, two answer choices that would correctly complete a given sentence and also create two similar sentences when used independently . Test takers would be required to enter the correct numeric answer to a math problem, in the new math questions, with no choices given. Although it is a computer adaptive test, the new GRE will be governed as a Multi-Stage Test (MST), commencing from August 1, 2011, letting test takers skip within individual sections.

Despite all these changes, the GMAT is chosen over the GRE by prospective business school applicants. Since majority of the zenith business schools still consider only GMAT and are at present reported not planning to accept the GRE. Hence, in a way, aspiring MBAs, who only take the GRE, edge their options.
