Anticipation Mounts For Iron Man 2

By:

In 2008 director Jon Favreu brought comic book favorite Iron Man from Marvel Comics to brilliant cinematic life. The movie helped announce that Robert Downey Jr., an actor whose history with drug use had hindered his career for many years. Iron Man had proved Downey was once again capable of being a leading man through a performance that many considered nearly flawless. Iron Man also raised the comic book movie to a new level of sophistication with not only great special effects, but character driven performances from some of the biggest name actors out there (Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard). With the enormous success that came with the movie, speculation of a sequel began almost immediately. Iron Man 2 Is indeed already in production and many are speculating that it will be bigger and better than the first one, although many of the plot details are being kept under wraps. Here are some of the details, however, that re known about the film.

After Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) revealed his superhero alter ego to the world in the first Iron Man, he finds that stress is quickly mounting as he balances heroics with business. It is also hinted that, as in the comic books, Stark will begin a descent into alcoholism, although it will not be as explicit as the source material. Scarlett Johanson is in the mix as the Russian spy the Black Widow, who is undercover working for Stark. Another acclaimed actor being thrown in is Academy Award nominee Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, a Russian ex-con with a suit similar to Stark's.

Sam Rockwell has also signed on to play Tony Stark's business rival Justin Hammer, who love nothing more than for Stark Industries business to fail. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role from his cameo at the end of the first movie as Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. One decision that has left the movie with a little bit of a controversy is the recasting of Terrence Howard's character of Jim Rhodes, also known as Rhodey, Tony Stark's best friend who in the comic books becomes his partner War Machine. Don Cheadle was cast in the role, and the recast has caused Howard to outspokenly badmouth the producers. It is largely speculated it is due to Howard being unwilling to lower his salary, which was higher than the other cast members in the first film.

Controversies aside, Iron Man 2 is expected to take the box office by storm when it opens May 7th, 2010.
