Anticipation For The Astro Boy Movie Mounts

By:

Anime is something that is taking the animation world by storm. Anime is the Japanese word for animation, and it has become some of the most commercially profitable genres in entertainment. One of the earliest and most well known anime to be brought to American audiences was Astro Boy. Astro Boy was created Osamu Tezuka, a man whose reputation had earned him many nick names including the Japanese Walt Disney, and even the God of Manga.

Astro Boy focused on a robot named Astro who looked like a real human boy. He was created to be a replacement for the dead son of a scientist. But when the scientist could not love the robot boy as he had his real son, he abandoned him and let him roam the world. Astro then set out to find his place in the world. Soon, Astro is adopted by a kinder professor who realizes that Astro has special powers and abilities, and soon he becomes a superhero.

There had been talk of a film for years and years, both while Osamu Tezuka was alive, and even after his death. The rights of the movie passed hands for many years, at one point even being developed by the Jim Henson Company as a live action feature film before the concept was abandoned. But now the character will be brought to the big screen in the form of a big budget computer animated film, maintaining the Astro Boy title.

The film is set to feature a star studded cast, with Freddie Highmore as the voice for Astro. The film will also feature the likes of Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Donald Sutherland, Matt Lucas, Samuel L. Jackson, and Charlize Theron.

The film is being created by the people at Imagi Animation Studios, the same company that created the film TMNT, based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, and who will soon be bringing another anime series, Gatchaman, to the big screen. The studio is well known for seeking to take the computer animated format and apply live action filmmaking techniques in order to boost the cinematic quality of the films that they make. This is why many people are highly anticipating the film adaptation of the classic animated character.

It remains to be seen whether or not Astro Boy will live up to the legacy and success of the animated series, but many fans are hoping that it will. They will have to wait until Astro Boy opens in October 2009.
