Antennas And Their Many Purposes

By:

We live in a very advanced technological age and although it seems that gadgets and electronics are improving everyday, that doesn't mean there is no more room for old technologies. One of the premier technologies introduced to the market and that is still in use today is the antenna. We don't acknowledge this technology much because we are bombarded with other seemingly more important technologies, such as high definition, the different types of HD televisions, and the things that a computer or other such device offers, but the fact remains that they are very reliable and are still used in many of our common household electronics.

Let's take a look at the radio. The most recent car stereo offerings feature high definition or satellite radio features, but what does it depend on to bring you the music and news through your car speakers? It relies on an antenna. Even if your car no longer has a long, thin, silver stick protruding from the rear trunk or somewhere on the rooftop, that doesn't mean that the antenna is not there. Without the antenna, the car stereo would be restricted to playing compact discs or using an mp3 player. Of course if there is a USB port or iPod or iPhone exclusive port built in, then you can use the iPhone for radio capabilities, but that's another story!

How about televisions? Although a couple of the most popular ways of watching television involve paying for service through cable and satellite providers, there are still a few million people across the United States and many more millions around the world who tune into their favorite television programming by using an antenna. Although an old technology, it is still very much reliable and productive. Not only do high definition televisions pick up more local channels than cable and satellite and also channels in high definition, but it is also a very economical and cost-effective way to watch TV.

Antennas have also benefited toys. That's right, radio remote controlled toys, such as cars, airplanes, helicopters, and even mini replicas of such animals as dinosaurs, dogs, and cats. The toys you can typically find at a toy store such as Toys R Us are good for children while hobbyists will enjoy a higher quality remote controlled model that can only be purchased at certain hobby and goods stores. These miniature models mimic the real vehicles so much so that some devices actually require fuel to operate.
