Another Way Of Looking At A Most Perplexing Question

By:

Why do those lacking in moral character prosper while the morally upright or innocent suffer?

Well, if those of good character don't get their reward here on earth, to me that implies that they will get it in the next phase of their eternal lives as born-again Christians. But they will prosper, and that eternally.

Conversely, if evil people don't get their just desserts in this life, they will get their dastardly harvests in the next . . . they are operating on a "credit" basis, while Christians pay "cash," so to speak. Otherwise, the universal law of reciprocity, where we reap what we plant, would be cancelled out.

So if someone is planting evil seeds now, the evil harvest will be theirs, in the here and nowor in the there and then.

There is another aspect to consider also. Just as some earthly fathers will overindulge their offspring in the hope that they will come to be appreciative and live their lives as they should, so I believe that our heavenly Father blesses the wayward most bountifully to influence them to return "home" to Himthat they will feel so blessed they will choose to respond appropriately and return to love Him. (Remember how the Israelites strayed again and again?)

Of course, many of us believe that the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, disciplines and chastises us for sins we may not even recall, but we also know that He forgives us in the end, even though His forgiveness doesn't change His eternal law of reciprocity.

In other words, just because we have His forgivness doesn't mean that we don't have to pay for our mistakes. He forgives violations of His natural laws, but He doesn't change the consequences of those violationsjust as our legal system will pardon a person of a crime after he has paid the price of so many years of confinement. And though the Lord forgives today, we still have to pay the consequenceseven if it takes a day or a decade.

Remember that, no matter how much the unGodly seem to prosper and thrive, their end is certain. So don't fall into the trap of feeling envious of their seeming prosperity, because their enjoyment is superficial and temporary . . . their joy is not full, because of that which they lack. Their spirit cannot be fulfilled, and the pity of it is, most of the time they don't even know why.
