Annual Goldwing Light Parade Is Taking Place In Blackpool This September

By:

'Wingers', the term given to those who own and ride a Honda GoldWing motorbike, will be able to take their bikes to the Blackpool Illumination event again this year. All bikers are welcome, however to take part in the parade you must own and ride a GoldWing of any vintage.

The success of last year's three night event based at Pontin's will be replicated as far as possible, however this year the event is to be held in conjunction with the Illuminations Switch, the first weekend in September, with the GoldWing parade taking place on the Saturday evening.

Static displays will include Honda Dealers and other stands which are dedicated to 'Wingers' interests. Riding area and places to show off the GoldWings to the general public and the usual camaraderie between Wingers will undoubtedly be taking place. This is a family event and is open for anyone who rides a bike, although those who wish to participate in the Saturday evening parade will have to be riding a GoldWing.

The event is only open to legally road registered bikes, off road bikes are not permitted even on Pontin's private grounds. Organisers are taking this very seriously, as such they are implementing a zero tolerance and anyone who caught riding a bike at Pontin's without the correct driving license, tax and insurance will be expelled. They are not prepared to put up with anyone who rides dangerously and could potentially put other people's lives or property at risk.

The security at Pontin's is also being taking seriously. There are barriers and security people patrolling the grounds overnight. Bikes will be permitted to park next to the chalet which is being rented, however normal security measures, including covering over of bikes is highly recommended by the organisers.

As in 2008 the event will be covered by Public Liability insurance, however every biker is required to have their machine insured for at least the legal minimum requirement, which is third party cover, while using their bike at any time even though the parade is not actually taking place on a public highway. Riders who have a comprehensive insurance policy will need to check with their insurers to ensure they will still be covered whilst taking part in the parade as it is on the Promenade, which is not strictly classed as a roadway.

After a serious accident occurred at another event last year those who are acting as Parade marshals should be covered as they are acting in a voluntary capacity, not as an employee. Under most insurance policies this type of activity is class as 'social and pleasure' as such there may be restrictions applied to their insurance policy, therefore for peace of mind that any marshals have appropriate and adequate insurance cover will need to have this clarified by their own insurance company.

'Wingers' will undoubtedly have the correct Honda motorcycle insurance, but they should also ensure that they abide by the limitations of their policy and not be cajoled into letting anyone else ride their bike unless they are insured to do so.
