Some women have no discernible difference in the lower leg, giving the appearance of what is commonly referred to as cankles, where the calf and the ankle are the same or similar width. The appearance of cankles can form when the adipose tissues along the soleus tendon become swollen or worsened from weight gain. Prior to beginning ankle liposuction, tumescent local anesthesia is placed into the fat layer to numb the tissues but also to allow a gentler, and less bloody removal of pure fat. Dr. Amron begins by first administering tumescent fluid (a local anesthesia) to the site. Recovery time is very brief, and patients often resume normal activities within a few days. He urges them to wear a compression garment and to keep their legs elevated during the recovery process to reduce or minimize instances of swelling.
