While shopping for makeup, the last thing on your mind is whether or not it was tested on animals. Many women do not even know a large portion of makeup is tested on animals. This sick fact is one well hidden by the cosmetic organizations that use such methods. Testing is not limited to putting makeup on the animal.

The Tests Done on Animals are Abusive

In order to analyze the toxicity of their product, the animals are force fed the chemicals in lethal doses. The animals then experience many side effects, such as internal organ damage, blood pressure changes, anemia, tremors, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness, excessive salivation, coma, and death. No animal or human should have to be subjected to such abuse.

Animal Testing is Optional

Did you know that regulatory agencies do not require animal testing to be done on cosmetic products? Yet, these companies still test their products on animals.

Alternatives to Animal Testing

In order to release cosmetic products, animal testing is not required. However, there are many alternatives to animal testing that still determine whether or not a cosmetic product is safe, such as QSAR computer analysis, in vitro, trial by human volunteers, eytex, reconstructed human epidermis, neutral red uptake test, microphysiometer, computer modeling, and human studies.

QSAR computer analysis is done to predict the likelihood of the skin becoming irritated.

In vitro testing uses test tubes to predict irritancy. This is actually cheaper and quicker than testing on animals.

Trial by human volunteers obviously uses volunteers to test the cosmetic products. This is also more reliable than testing on animals, because their bodies are different from a humans. The most accurate results will come from human testing.

Eytex testing utilizes a machine to determine eye irritancy level.

Reconstructed human epidermis is a multi-layered human skin that was grown in a laboratory. This human skin is used for testing the cosmetic products.

Natural red uptake test utilizes normal cells in culture that absorb and hold a neutral red dye. Whenever an irritating chemical is applied, the red dye decreases.

A microphysiometer measures slight changes in cell metabolism by calculating changes in pH of the cell culture nutrient fluid.

Computer modeling is a method of predicting irritancy of new substances based on what is already known.

Human studies use volunteers to place substances on small areas of the upper back for two days. This is simple and much more humane than what is done to animals.

In conclusion, with so many alternative and efficient ways of testing cosmetic products, why are so many organizations testing on animals? These methods of more humane testing include QSAR computer analysis, in vitro, trial by human volunteers, eytex, reconstructed human epidermis, neutral red uptake test, microphysiometer, computer modeling, and human studies. Moreover, testing on animals is not required by any regulatory agency in order to release the products. So, why is it so hard to find animal cruelty free makeup on the shelves?

If you want to replace your cosmetic products with animal cruelty free makeup, all you have to do is research which companies do not test on animals. In order to find reliable companies, you can look at companies designated as animal cruelty free by large, reputable animal rights organizations, such as PETA.
