Siem Reap in Cambodia has acquired the status of a major tourist destination, principally as it is the entranceway to the famed Angkor Archaeological Park. This region includes the renowned ancient capitals of several dynasties of the once mighty Khmer empire. Notable sites include the magnificent complex of Angkor Wat and the Bayon Temple which contains numerous fine sculptures.
Angkors temples are regarded as highly symbolic constructions. Many of the temples represent the Hindu conceptualization of Mount Meru, the abode of the gods; they are built along the lines of a pyramidal shape with exactly five towers, representative of the five summits of Mount Meru. The majority of the constructions to be seen today at the archaeological park are representative of Hindu mythology, but there are a few Buddhism-related relics as well.
Many of the multitudes of visitors who arrive at the town of Siem Reap make it a point to visit the Angkor Zoo. Although this zoo does not compare with the major zoos of the developed world, it is still an attractive site featuring a myriad of living creatures.
A highlight of the zoo is the great variety of bird species on display, with numerous colourful avian varieties on display for the viewer. Particularly notable are the various water birds such as ducks, herons and storks. Flying birds and fruit bats are housed in spacious aviaries. Another strong point is the vast array of reptiles, notably a profusion of crocodiles and many snakes including pythons and cobras. Unusual monitor lizards are a specialty of the zoo.
There are also many mammalian exhibits, from numerous porcupines to large species like leopards; the zoo is particularly well known for its impressive collection of bears and cheetahs. Sun bears, unfamiliar to many visitors are a point of interest. There are also diverse kinds of apes and monkeys, from gibbons to macaques.
Interestingly in several instances, different species are housed together, in order to save precious resources. This has only been done, when there is no likelihood of the different animals harming each other.
