Anesthetics: To Be Or Not To Be?

Even since the first time the anesthetic was adopted, it has been viewed as a double-edged sword. From the positive aspect, it surely helps to alleviate the patients pain. The word anesthetic means to cause a loss of sensation and nitrous oxide. Sometimes it is called laughing gas the patients can even laugh while undergoing an operation. The anesthetic could cause a patient to lose consciousness and, therefore, be insensitive to pain. After its invention, he anesthetic was soon adopted by dentists and other doctors. Soon others medicines with similar function were created, like ether, chloroform and other gasses etc to alleviate the pain of every medical case from tooth extraction to childbirth. All of these anesthetics were designed to cause unconsciousness to the whole body. Later the development of local anesthetics became essential and important because local anesthetics are less traumatic for the patient and, in many cases, leave the patient completely functional as soon as the surgery is completed. Doctors nowadays have more choices of general or local anesthetics to use for specific medical work and many patients have been given an anesthetic of some sort at one time or another. Gone are those days several people cooperated to hold one patient down just to have a tooth fixed.
However, while the anesthetics are used to help to develop the medical science, at the same time, they have been misused. They are sometimes used for purposes for which they were not intended or even used recklessly and for fun. For example, some anesthetics, known as date rape drugs, have been used to facilitate sexual assaults. Some drivers drink alcohols and other chemicals to make them lose physical sensitivity but some drivers insist on driving while still under influence and then become killers on road.
Then how should the anesthetics be viewed with such conflicting influences on life? Although the misuse of the anesthetics is unwise and have caused some problems and even crimes, no one could deny the wide benefits available to all of the patients from modern anesthetics used by professional doctors. Almost every medical miracle, from the kidneys transplanting to implanting the artificial teeth into the patients jaws, is created with the help of the anesthetics. It is human beings that should be blamed for its misuse and the anesthetics themselves are innocent. Therefore, strict laws must be issued to direct the use and development of the anesthetics.
