Android Tablet Launch Hype

By:

When Apple anounced the launch of the ipad and then the ipad 2 it was produced as a full blown media event. The way new tech products are launched today if the launch day sales are not absolutely extraordinary then that product is in danger of getting killed before the lines of eager buyers can even get in the door. Especially in the Smartphone and Android Tablets marketplace.

HP's Touchpad is a good example of this marketing trend. 7 weeks post launch it was killed. Microsoft's Kin mobile hones only made it 48 days as well. Flip-Live from Pure Digital the makers of the now defunct Flip camcorder shut down entirely one day before it's scheduled release after Cisco acquired Pure in 2009 and then closed the entire division.

It's either sell huge right off the bat or say goodbye.

Some would trace this mentality back to Apple. Every launch of a new Apple product is like a movie premier. A media extravaganza.

Throw in the speed of light social chat-o-sphere and a product can either gain acceptance from all the positive blogging and tweeting or be left standing outside looking in.

If the initial launch momentum is stopped then it's nearly impossible to recover.

The yearly and sometimes twice yearly upgrade frenzy that occurs with tech gadgets is challenging enough for consumers to stay ahead of the curve but now add the willingness to cut a product so soon after launch and the consumer is often left behind.

Enter the HP TouchPad again. People were lined up outside their favorite tech store to be the first ones to get their hands on it. When buyers began to use the new Android Tablet they found that lack of apps and poor customer support left them dissappointed and led to many buyers turning into refunders.

To keep an inferior product competitive in todays marketplace is very expensive and it is cheaper to just kill it off.

Just two days after HP announced the death of the TouchPad you could buy one for almost 80% off. The extreme discounts sparked a frenzy of buying that was what HP had hoped to see initially. The 16 Ghz model could be bought for as low as $100 at retailers and at HP's own online store.

Watching the trends online and waiting to see which way a new Android Tablet or Smartphone is going to go are your only defences against this all or nothing mentality that is the new standard.
