Android Sms Bug Causes Big Flap

Are your SMS messages going to the right person? Have you been sending messages to one phone number, only to have it received by someone totally different? Apparently this has been an ongoing bug in the Android SMS App system for about 6 months. As of today Google still hasnt fixed the problem.

Android SMS Bug Causes Big Flap

Is this an OS problem or an App problem? According to Adrian Kingsley-Hughes, ZDNet, this is an OS problem. He describes it as, The Android bug relates to SMS messages, specifically SMS messages being composed with one recipient in mind but which ended up being set to a completely different person in the contacts list. This issue has been ongoing for six months.

Chuck Falzone, AndroidGuys, clarifies the bug is real. There is something about certain email-to-SMS messages that corrupts Androids SQLite database, causing unpredictable results thereafter. The most commonly cited offender is alerts sent by Bank of America, though SMS alerts sent by LinkedIn and T-Mobile are also cited. Its possible that any SMS where the sender is an email address will do the trick, or its possible theres something else these specific senders messages have in common.

Comments made from readers arent encouraging. The bug has been affecting users for over 6 months. ZDNet readers predict the following time line for the fix:

1. A small team will investigate it.
2. Within 2 weeks, it will be reproducible on demand.
3. Within a week, a fix will be in the tree.
4. Within 20 weeks, all new phones shipping will have it pre-installed.
5. Within 50 weeks 30% of phones will have it installed.

Google upgraded the bug alert to critical on January 4th. A week or so ago they only had it rated as priority medium. For Google to not take action immediately on this issue is a sure flaw in the company policy. The Android market has been growing exponentially since the phone Droid phone was released. With a bug like this to be ongoing for over 6 months may seriously affect Googles market. Earlier I posted a blog about malware on an Android App. See my blog, Third-Party Chinese Android App Contains Malware. Will corporations ban Android Smartphones due to unreliability?Hmm
