And At This Point For Something Quite Unique -- The Compound Bow ,

And now for something completely different - The Compound Bow

If you could re-write the history books, it would be interesting to ponder the amount of extra damage that Robin Hood could have inflicted on the Sheriff of Nottingham, if only he'd been lucky enough to have a compound bow. They weren't actually invented until the 1960's, but it's still an interesting concept, although if we are to believe what we read in the history books, Robin Hood was pretty accurate with his traditional long bow and didn't even need the extra accuracy on offer with the compound bow.

If you had even shown a compound bow to Robin Hood he would probably have had no idea what he was looking at. They are a million miles away from the traditional looking longbows of Sherwood Forest, or the bows and arrows which the native Indians bravely used to fight the cowboys; for they have an intricate looking series of cams, pulleys and wheels. The sport of compound archery wouldn't actually be possible without this series of gadgets, nobody would have sufficient strength to pull it back.

In particular, the cam which is found on the compound bow allows the archer to pull back string with an increased weight, launching the arrow into the air with much more speed and creating a flatter flight path. This enables the arrow to fly much further, but also makes the sport of compound archery much more accurate than those using traditionally designed bows.

Although the idea of the compound bow was first born in the 1960s, the last couple of decades have seen lots of further development, and these bows are generally used in competition today. There are plenty of different makes and models of bows to choose from including mathews compound bows, bowtech compound bows and pse compound bows.

Although the design might look quite cumbersome and complicated, you will probably be surprised at just how light the compound bow is, and once fitted with a suitable system of sights, the best compound archery sportsmen and women can hit full marks again and again, even if, to the untrained spectator, the target is nothing more than a speck on the distant horizon.

It's hardly surprising then that compound archery is increasing in popularity, but do be careful, you need lots of space in which to practice - shooting a few arrows at the garden fence is a big no no, after all, a compound bow is a very dangerous and lethal weapon which needs to be treated very carefully.
