Analysing The Changes In The Singapore Employment Pass Scheme

By:

Government of Singapore along with the Ministry of Manpower in the country that is responsible for processing all work visa related applications by foreign professionals have announced a few significant changes in the countrys incredibly popular employment pass scheme. Ever since the new changes were announced, companies operating in the country have been scrambling to learn more about the new norms of the employment pass and how it would affect them. Of course overseas professionals who were looking for jobs in Singapore are the most affected and a lot of them would be interested to learn more about these new norms in place.

To analyse the new norms introduced by the Government of Singapore, it is mainly to do with the eligibility criteria of the respective employment passes. Basically it is has been made stricter and more stringent than what it was before. Most analysts believe that the administration in the country had no choice but to introduce stricter conditions for foreign workers to enter Singapore. Already over one third of the working population in the country was made up of foreigners. There needed to be special amendments introduced to the immigration policy to create a level playing field for local residents. Government of Singapore did not want to create a situation where local residents would start to face unwarranted stiff competition from foreign professionals for jobs they could easily fulfil. Also many believe that the new changes in the immigration policy only reflect the ground reality in the country. Singapore had an open door policy for foreigners that allowed the country to grow really quickly and ensure the vast number of businesses operating in Singapore, both local and foreign owned never had a problem finding a suitable employee with the required skillsets. It also ensured Singapores sparse population grew at a steady pace and the country overall got exposed to the best from the world. Now that Singapore has achieved what it wanted and already more than a million foreign professionals are working in the country, there is no need to have such a liberal immigration policy anymore. Companies have the required talent within the country itself and Singapores population has also grown by a few million over the past decade.

Although some companies in Singapore may be affected by the new rules and it is to be seen whether Singapore remains such a hotspot for offshore company setup, overall the changes have been welcomed and it will be for the benefit of local residents living in Singapore.
