Definition of Theater Theater is an art of performing live where performers present an event or story. The word ""theater"" comes from the Greek word Theatron meaning a place for viewing. Theater presentation involves singing and dancing. Opera and ballet are also part of theater arts. History of Theater Theater during ancient times is labelled through dances. Primitive groups believed that dance casts evil spirits and negative powers; whilst European theaters sprung from Ancient Greeks where dancers wore masks and customs made from animal skins. Women in ancient times are not allowed to participate in the dance. In Roman times, theater actors were slaves. Forms of Theaters Resident theater. Also called producing theater, resident theater company owns a theater venue; at the same time, they can perform in the place. Rental theater. Also referred as presenting theater. They do not own a theater company, so they just rent. Street theater. This is when theatrical performance takes place anywhere such as in the streets or any non-tradition theatrical places. Touring theater. It is an independent theater company where performers travel internationally. Importance of Theater Studies revealed that children who are connected to theaters are found to be smarter kids. In addition to their enhanced reading skills and imagination, theater plays enable the child's mind to work in such a way it will connect him to literature and history. The sooner a child is engaged to play, the better. In United States, the number of children interested and enrolled to theatrical plays is progressing. Most of these companies produce best talent performers. The Children's Theater Company One of the most theater group performers is the Children's Theater Company. Formerly known as The Moppet Players, the Childrens Theater Company was formed in 1961 in Minnesota. It was founded by John Clark Donahue, but was ousted after being charged with sexual issues in 1984. He was replaced by Jon Craney. They are the first child theater group to receive the Regional Tony Award in 2003. The group focuses on plays for family and youth. They also perform story books and other childrens literature. Among of the group's production include Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and many more. The Children's Theater Company was an accredited school for grade school and high school. The group taught both academics and performance arts. Mentors of the school are members of the regional theater. The Children's Theater Company remained to be an international theater replica.
