An Overview Of The Causes And Symptoms Of Traumatic Brain Injury (tbi)

By:

The most common causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are auto accidents, falls, and sports accidents. According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 2 million people suffer from TBI each year, the majority of which are caused by auto accidents. People who suffer from traumatic brain injuries usually suffer from lifelong disabilities.

When a person is involved in an auto accident, a brain injury is most likely to happen from side impact rather than rear impact. In auto accidents, brain injuries typically occur due to the force of a head slamming into an object, such as a window or steering wheel. When the head hits the object at a high speed, the brain encounters blunt trauma, and damage can be found on the opposite side of the brain in which the trauma occurred. This type of injury is known as contrecoup. Even if the head does not suffer a blunt trauma, but instead comes to a sudden stop at high speeds, such as in sever whiplash, the brain continues to move forward and collides with the skull. This can cause bruising to the brain and hemorrhaging.

Another type of brain injury that can occur in car accidents is isotropic stress. This happens when a wave of pressure moves through the brain at high speeds. This generally occurs in high-speed car accidents where a severe change in velocity happens at impact. The brain cells are damaged from the severe change in density.

Some other brain injuries that can occur are concussions and anoxic brain injuries. Concussions usually happen as a result of blunt trauma to the head; symptoms include dizziness, loss of consciousness, confusion, loss of memory, and nausea. Anoxic brain injuries happen when the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain is disrupted; symptoms include swelling of brain tissue and bleeding.
