Maruti Wagon R was launched in 1993 by Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), earlier known as Maruti Udyog Limited. It is a subsidiary company of Japan-based Suzuki Motor Corporation. MSIL is a leader in the Indian passenger car market since last two decades. According to a press release in April 2011, MSIL has sold around 95,000 vehicles both in the domestic market and abroad. The total sales have gone up by 4.4% since last year.
The company mainly manufactures small-and-mid-sized cars for convenience and easy maintenance. Apart from Wagon R, some of the other passenger car models are Alto, Zen, Ritz, and Swift. Moreover, the company also manufactures two multi-utility vehicles, Gypsy and Grand Vitara.
Wagon R is one the most highly sold models of the company in the economically middle class of the society. It looks like a van with a short bonnet, high roof, and compressed hatchback. Due to its compact design, it requires fewer parking spaces and is easy to maneuver. At the same time, it is designed to be spacious and comfortable from inside.
Wagon R has the following variants.
Maruti Wagon R LX DUO It is the base model of the first launch of Wagon R series. It can be run on petrol or diesel. It has a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox.
Maruti Wagon R LXI DUO It is a higher version of the base model. It has additional features like power steering, front power windows, warning lamp, etc. A silver finish in inside door handles and chrome finish in instrumental panel improvises the appearence of its interior.
Maruti Wagon R LX It is the base model of the redesigned Wagon R series launched with better technology and additional features. It is fitted with 1.0L petrol engine with displacement of 998cc and conforms to BS IV emission norms. To offer different storage spaces, it has a front passenger under seat tray and seat back pocket, push type cup holders, etc.
Maruti Wagon R LXI It is the upgraded version of Wagon R LX with slightly more features.
Maruti Wagon R VXI This is the top most model having tilted steering, keyless entry, security system, airbags, ABS, and many more advanced features.
Maruti Wagon R LXI CNG Unlike other models, it runs on CNG thereby making it an attractive choice for people who want to avoid exorbitant petrol expenses. All the other basic features are same as that in other models.
