Spyware, as its name suggests is a type of malware that collects information on both elements of the user's knowledge. Their presence is quite difficult to detect and is often hidden from the user.

Malware is short for malicious software. It is a general term for all kinds of invasive and annoying software or program code. Malware is software that is designed to access a computer system without the knowledge and consent of the user.

Software is considered to be Malware based on the intent of the creator as opposed to its features. It includes Trojan horses, computer viruses and spyware among a host of other such unwanted software.

Most spyware is installed with software that the user wants to retrieve. It may also prompt the user to install it by posing as security software. It can also be combined with other software. In this way, the user must download the software it needs, and the installer will download spyware and other software needed.

The installation of spyware is most commonly associated with Internet Explorer because of its history of security issues. It is an easy point for attack into Windows because of its deep integration with the Windows environment.

A machine infected by a spyware program mostly has multiple infections. Its effects on a system include unwanted CPU activity, system failures and a host of other stability issues. It could also interfere with networking software thus making it difficult to connect to the internet. Because spyware is difficult to detect, the user will mostly assume that the problem is hardware related.

Spyware often the newspaper advertisements. Some programs will pop-up ads when a user opens a web browser specific. Many spyware makers to sell advertising space to advertisers.

In certain cases spyware has been linked to identity theft. It is possible that spyware may be used to transfer chat session and even passwords to bank account.

Many anti-spyware programs offer real time protection against the installation of spyware software. They scan the incoming network data for spyware and block all threats.

There are also a number of programs that can detect and remove spyware already installed on your computer system. These also allow the user to schedule regular checkups to detect and remove spyware.

In addition to using anti-spyware programs, network firewalls and web proxies can also be used to block access to websites that are known to install spyware. It is also important to download programs only from reputable sources in order to avoid the threat of spyware.
