An Introduction To Dns And How It Is Important For Your Web Page

DNS, which is a standard for webhosting, stands for "Domain Network System". A domain network system is a database system that converts any computer's name into an IP address. This IP address is then used by computers on a network in order to stay connected and share data. Obviously it would be difficult to memorize such a complicated series of numbers (of which an IP address is made of). That's why instead of having to memorize the IP address, we just have to remember a domain name.

A domain network system gives its users the liberty to connect to another computer on the network or any other remote service by using the domain name rather than the entire IP address. Any organization that hosts a computer network will have at least managing queries related to domain network system. The server used in web hosting is referred to as the name server. With this server, the list of all IP addresses recognized by the network are listed. It also lists all those IP addresses that have been accessed outside the network.

Each computer on the network just needs to remember the location of just one name server. Three things can happen when a computer on the network asks for an IP address. The first thing that could happen is that you can get immediate response from locally registered name servers in your network. The response is immediate. Second, the local name server can be retrieved from the cache if someone in your network has requested for a similar address. Like the previous outcome, there is also no waiting time.

Lastly, if the requested IP address is not registered locally and also you are the first person to ask for this address, then the local name server will undertake a search on behalf of your network. The local name server will have to access potentially remote servers in the process. Because of this, the response will not be immediate; the speed will depend primarily on your Internet connection and even on the number of intermediary name servers. There could also be rare cases in which you will not get a response. In case this happens, you will just need to repeat the query or follow the instructions in the error message.

You will usually enter the domain name instead of the numerical IP address whenever you want to connect to another computer using an application. The application will then use the domain name in order to gather the corresponding IP address from the name server. The IP address can be easily retrieved as long as you know the remote computer's domain name. In fact, most Internet applications won't require you to know the IP address of the other computer.
