An Introduction Of Persepolis Palaces Near Shiraz, Iran

By:

Persepolis Palaces are the best reminders of the ancient Achaemenid Empire. These palaces are at Persepolis which is situated at a distance of 70 km from the Shiraz city, Fars Province of modern Iran. Many international tourists come to the ancient site when they visit Iran.

As against the common belief of most westerners, Persian Empire was the first ever global empire in the world and even preceded that of the Romans. So while visiting the palaces, the visitors should keep in mind that they have come to the world's first ancient global civilization and culture.

History:

The ancient palaces were built in the heart of the Persian highlands in the Zagros mountain range. As the area was used by the royalty and royal families as residence, a number of palaces were built at the site at regular intervals. Each of the palaces displays a classic collection of the best of the world architecture of its contemporary times by the ruler who ordered its building. So even though the palaces are in ruins now, a visitor will still be amazed by the remaining architecture of the Persepolis Palaces.

Structures:

Many western tourists include these palaces as a part of their itinerary when they visit Iran due to the historical significance of palaces and structures remaining in the site. There is the huge Gate of all Nations carrying Xerxes' name written in three languages and carved on the entrances, reminding people on whose order the huge structure was built.

The Persepolis Palaces also include the Apadana Palace, which was built by Darius the Great at the western side to use it for royal audiences. People also love to see the Throne Hall or the Hundred-Columns Palace started by Xerxes and completed at the end of fifth century BC during the reigns of his son Artaxerxes.

Tombs:

Tourists also love to visit the tombs of different kings located inside the Persepolis Palace compound. These tombs are made using the best of art and architecture available during the period. Tombs of some of the Achaemenid kings are made at the hillside overlooking Persepolis like those of Artaxerxes ll and Artaxerxes lll.

It takes a long visit of Iran to realize that rock tombs of this type had been the legacy of Medes' kings form whom Achaemenids had inherited the architecture and tradition. Slender columns at Persepolis are unique examples of Iranians' craftsmanship and style evolved from other first millennium monuments in Iran. Staircases were also popular among Iranian architects before Persepolis was built.
