An Exploration Of Machu Picchu

An Exploration Of Machu Picchu

By:

8,000 feet above sea level near the Urubamba Valley in Peru lay an ancient city that cant be accurately described in a photo or in text. By many, Machu Picchu is considered to be one of the most interesting places to visit in the Southern Hemisphere, and possible in the world. Discovered by modern explorers less than 100 years ago, there is still much about this city that researchers do not know. One thing that is agreed upon is that a trip across the world to these ruins is well worth the time, money and effort.

To get to Machu Picchu, youve got a few options. The first is to contract an experienced tour company to book the various forms of transportation that youll need to get there. The second is to figure it out for yourself. Of course, I recommend the first. For those who want to do it themselves, Machu Picchu can be most easily accessed from the city of Cusco, Peru. From there, you can take a train, automobile or simply walk for 5 days to reach the site. The train ride is recommended for travelers interested in experiencing beautiful panoramas at a slow pace.

Once you arrived, you can expect to see a relatively in-tact ancient Incan city built of stone walls. As you explore the city, try to imagine the challenges that must have been overcome in building such a magnificent city high in the mountains more than 500 years ago. The space contains more than 140 structures including the Sun Gate, Temple of the Sun, the Moon Temple and the Great Cave. As you experience new vistas from this ancient city, you may begin to understand why they went through so much trouble to build in such a difficult place.

Touring the ruins can be done in about a day, although some visitors opt to stay longer to absorb the surroundings and to further explore the area. Area tour guides will be glad to lead you through the ruins and explain what is known about the mysterious ruins. In Machu Picchu, youre not too far from basic needs either. For food, there are a few restaurants in bar which should hold you over for your stay. For sleep, there are a few hotels nearby which offer accommodations which can go for a pretty hefty price. Do your research before going to find the best deals.

No matter what you do, dont come to Peru without experiencing Machu Picchu. Whether youre interested in seeing the city on a tight budget or with finer luxuries, both are possible and within reach. Make the journey; youll be glad you did.
