An Electrical Contractor Talks About Electrical Wiring

By:

There are different types of electrical wires that electrical contractors work with on a consistent basis. Wiring is an important component of an electrical system as it carries electricity to the places where we need them. Knowing the type of wires that are used in your house is an important part of helping to keep your home safe.

Aluminum Wiring

Electrical contractors know that aluminum wiring is a hidden danger in many homes. It is a danger that many people may not even be aware of. This type of wiring was installed in homes during the 1960s and 1970s, especially in mobile homes. Aluminum was the chosen material to wire homes because it was cheaper than many other types of materials and easier to find. It is also easy to bend and shape. However, aluminum is less conducive to carry electricity and much easier to damage. If the aluminum wire becomes overheated, it can cause a fire in the home. If there is aluminum wiring in your home, an electrical contractor can come and replace it with safer wiring material.

Copper Wiring

Copper is the standard material that many electrical contractors use for wiring projects. Copper is a much better conductor for electricity than aluminum. It is also very easy to work with. A problem with copper is people stealing the wiring. People often steal copper wire for money. However, if someone comes into contact with a live copper wire while trying to steal it, he or she can receive serious injuries. Or, even possibly death. It is always best to leave copper wiring where it is, unless there is some sort of safety issue.

Silver Wiring

Silver wiring is not as common as copper or even aluminum wiring. Silver is most likely the best conductor for electricity. However, silver is very expensive and very difficult to shape. More often than not, any silver wiring usually has some copper mixed in. It is very unlikely pure silver wires will be found in homes, despite their effectiveness in carrying electricity.

The type of metal used in the home does not only determine the safety of electrical wiring. Electrical wiring is best left to a professional, as electricity is dangerous and unpredictable. There are good wiring principles that need to be followed to ensure safety. The electrical wiring in your home should have proper insulation and be installed by a qualified electrical contractor to minimize any danger.
