An Agent Just Requested My Manuscript. What Do I Do Now?

By:

So, you've submitted your query letter to multiple agencies and have finally heard back from someone who wants to see your manuscript, right? Don't panic. Celebrate! Aspiring authors wait years to get an agent to request their work, so be excited that you've finally received the news you've been dreaming about!

The first thing to remember is that this is just the beginning of the long journey to getting your book published. Your manuscript or book proposal better be good and it better be ready, because you often only get one shot to make the right impression with these agents. This is what you should have been doing while you were waiting for them to reply, because once they request your material, the last thing you want to do is make them wait for it. If they're left waiting, you can bet that there is a good chance they'll write you off and completely forget about you in the meantime.

If you need it, though, there's help out there. In fact, there are even former editors from majoring publishing houses and former agents that are willing to help you whip that manuscript in shape. Check this out: http://www.GumboWriters.com

Once you're certain it's perfect, you're ready for the next step, which is to note exactly what it is that they are asking for. Often times, they'll tell you to send the first 10 pages or the first 50 pages. Do exactly as they say. Nothing less and nothing more. I can't stress enough how important this is. You want to show them right away that you are compliant and can follow directions. Trust me, you'll go a lot further if you do as they say.

Keep in mind that it doesn't necessarily mean they liked your concept more or less just because they requested to see 10 pages rather than 50, or the full manuscript instead of a partial. Every agent has their own preferences and personal reasons, and most of the time it's simply out of the best interest of time management.

You have to also make sure that it is properly formatted. If you visit their website, or search Google, you'll be able to make sure your manuscript is presented in a way that they expect.
