All the residents of Jaisalmer resided in the Jaisalmer Fort until the 18th century when they finally moved to the plateau below.

During the time of the British Raj, Jaisalmer was the seat of the Indian State ( A princely state ) and was entitled to a 15 gun salute until the end of the British Raj. A film ( Sonar Kella ) was written by Satyijat Ray ( A famous Indian Film Director ) and it was based on the Jaisalmer Fort. This Fort houses about quater of the city's population and has massive sandstone walls which have tawny lion colour in the daylight and magically changes to honey-gold as the sun sets. It's main attraction is the Raj Mahal ( Royal Palace ), Jain temples and the Laxminath temple. There is also the Patwon-ki-haveli, Salam-ki-haveli, Nathmalji-ki-haveli, and the Haveli Shreenath built by the Vyas family. The museums in Jaisalmer include the Desert Culture Center and Museum, Jaisalmer Folklore Museum and the Government Museum. In Jaisalmer, there are several Jain temples that belong to the Jain Community, these temples are dedicated to the 16th Tirthankar ( Lord Shantinath ) and the 23rd Tirthankar ( Lord Parshvanath ) with the oldest libraries in India where you can find the rarest manuscripts and artifacts of Jain Tradition also found in Jaisalmer and also many Jain Pilgrimage Centres. Jaisalmer also has a lake known as Gadisar lake ( a scenic rainwater lake) which is surrounded by small temples and shrines.
