Amsterdam Architecture: A World Built Differently

By:

One of the most easily noticed and intricate visual delights for visitors to enjoy is the vast differences in architecture and the huge variety of structures that were erected by some of the finest engineers known to man.

If you go to the Canal district, you will see massive Louis style 18th century buildings, all of which are made to maintain an elegant and classic look to them. They serve mostly as museums and libraries for you to wander, and they lie in the "golden bend" which is said to be where the most beautiful architecture in Amsterdam lies.

Outside of the Golden Bend, there are still many interesting and scenic buildings for you to enjoy such as the Multatuli, a museum completely dedicated to the author Eduard Douwes Dekker who wrote under the synonym Multatuli.

If museums are not your forte then one will surely enjoy the Leidspein square, a place where everything from music festivals and trendy restaurants to a huge clubbing scene are there for you to enjoy, as well as the impressively large theaters such as Stadsschouwburg.

Outside of the Canal district, there is also the Scheepvaarthuis to visit, one of the largest schools, that towers and wields an aesthetic quality about it unlike any other building in the world. The building was designed by J.M. van der Mey in 1912, and it was completed in 1916. The school sits near where there used to be a harbor, right on the water, and while the people utilizing the building has changed through time, the classical look and complex design of the building has always stayed loyal to the buildings architect, and continues to do so for all to see.

Amsterdam Central Station was erected in 1889, and has vastly grown since then into one of the most used world class railway stations. Since its original design was formed by Pierre Cuyper and Dolf van Gendt, the building has earned quite a reputation for its pleasing visual exterior. It now not only serves as an icon of Amsterdam, and a great spectacle for visitors, but actually is one of the most reliable railway stations despite the fact that it serves around 300,000 people a day.
These are just choice few of the massive variety of buildings and architecture to enjoy in Amsterdam. Not only should these museums and classic iconic buildings be pleasing to you, but the differences in the architecture of standard buildings as well, will reflect the differences from this culture to ours. It is something that is easily enjoyed, and definitely worth the visit.
