Some sobering facts about Amethyst

I love the amethyst stone because of it’s mythological past. Always a fan of Greek mythology, and fine wine, amethyst the perfect gem for me to add to my collection. Amethyst comes from he Greek word “amethystos” translates into “not drunken.” Throughout history, Amethyst has been considered to be a strong antidote against drunkenness. That’s the main reason you will see amethyst engraved on wine goblets. Even today the gemstone amethyst, or even amethyst jewelry still symbolizes sobriety.

But more on the ancient legends of amethyst. When you look at Greek mythology you’ll learn that Dionysius, the god of intoxication, was angered one day by an insult from a human and swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path. He even sent tigers should carry out his wish. About that time a beautiful maiden named Amethyst passed by on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana. Amethyst become Dionysius’ victim and was attacked by the tiger. But the goddess Diana quickly intervened and turned Amethyst into a stature of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws of the Tiger.

When Dionysus saw the beautiful statue, he wept tears of sorrow for his action. He was so sorry for what he had done that his mythical tears stained the quartz statue purple, creating the famous gemstone we call Amethyst today. Lovely story, one of my favorites.

Here’s more on this purple colored beauty. Amethyst is also the birthstone for people who are born in February, which makes it a wonderful birthday gift. It is also the sign of Pisces in the Zodiac and Amethyst is assigned to the planet Neptune. Amethyst is said to be of help for headaches, pancreas and backache, although the healing power of gems is a bit controversial. If you believe in it though, you should always wear amethyst close to your skin.
