Amethyst Beads For Valentine's Season

By:

Wondering what to gift your loved one this Valentines Day? As we all know, the Valentines season brings with it the feelings of love and affection and an opportunity to show your loved one how much you care. In a way it also brings in anxiety since you need to decide on the best gift for your partner, something that can define or embody your feelings. So why not give them a gift that truly symbolizes the day as well as the month of February- Amethyst beads. Amethyst, as most of us know, is a violet stone that belongs to the quartz variety and is the birthstone for the month of February. A beautiful and almost unparalleled purple gemstone, it could have been a very expensive stone, save for its wide availability. Its shade generally varies between pinkish purple to almost deep purple and is known for its opulent appeal. You must be wondering as to why we are dwelling upon buying these stone beads when Valentines is generally all about candy hearts, mushy cards and red roses. Well those who want to dig deeper into their significance, here is our explanation. According to the legend of the great St. Valentine (the harbinger of love and the reason why we celebrate this day), it is said that St. Valentine wore an amethyst ring that was carved in a cupids shape. This is why the stone holds such an importance for the day.

Another reason as to why the amethyst beads are an ideal gift for your valentine is that these beads have been believed to signify romance, love and fertility. This significance long pre-dates the rage that Hallmark love cards have in todays times. But before St. Valentines legend, there is a fable behind Cleopatras ring. It is said that Cleopatra wore a spectacular amethyst ring (signifying light, life and love) and she was believed to be an incarnation of the Goddess of Love, Venus by the Romans. Since she ensorcelled two great Roman generals, i.e. Mark Antony and Julius Caesar, it was believed by Roman wives that wearing Amethyst beads in any jewelry form would ensure the devotion of their husbands.

Then there is the legend of Amethyst, the maiden with whom the Greek god Dionysus, the god of fertility, fell in love with. On refusing the drunken Dionysus love, he turned her into quartz in a rage. But his action caused him painful sorrow and filled him with remorse. He cried on the foot of Amethysts statue and the wine-purple tears of Dionysus stained the quartz statue forever. The early clergymen considered amethyst beads to give the person wearing them feelings of devotion and love for others as well as a clear head.

So now that you know what the symbolism of amethyst beads is for the Valentines season, go out there and but some piece of amethyst-beaded jewelry for your loved one. It compliments almost every skin tone, is rich to look at and is durable enough. Most of all, it will embody your love for them in this gift as it is a sign of eternal love.
