American Idol Judges: From "exactly Where Could They Be Right Now" To Celebs

The American Idol Show judges have come and gone since the television show's 2002 debut. Only one, Randy Jackson, has remained on as a judge. He will shortly tackle American Idol's tenth season, along with fellow judges, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

The successful Tv series American Idol (AI) is unquestionably the most famous tv show in the U.S., holding the highest position in Nielsen rankings for seven straight years. American Idol has received multiple Emmy Awards, and features an exceptional team of producers and entertainers, including host, Ryan Seacrest and director, Bruce Gowers. The AI judges have played no less a part in the astounding success of the series.

The initial eight seasons of American Idol were supervised by the first group of judges: colorful performer and choreographer, Paula Abdul, experienced album producer and song manager, Randy Jackson, and astute sound director and producer, Simon Cowell. Each brought a specific panache and intensity of spirit that permanently named American Idol as a successful show.

During 2009, the mysterious inclusion of a 4th judge, artist/songwriter and music producer Kara DioGuardi, brought more womanly appeal to the show, but DioGuardi never actually marshaled the celebrity strength required of American Idol judges. Then, when judge Paula Abdul left the tv show after the '09 season, standup comedian Ellen DeGeneres joined DioGuardi as a rookie judge. DeGeneres was not amusing and had a hard time being critical. Both DioGuardi and DeGeneres left the judges table in 2010.

The following American Idol judge to leave was Simon Cowell. Most widely known for scornful criticism of much less-than-excellent singers, Cowell left after the 2010 season. His departure was expected to remove a reasonable part of the viewers base, but that did not happen. Actually, Idol actually grew its faithful viewership in 2011.

The present popularity of American Idol might be credited to substitute judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. Tyler is the flamboyant frontman for the rock band, Aerosmith. He's prone to rambling reviews filled with profundity and curses. Lopez is better known as an occasional actress and sexy pop diva, branded by People magazine as "the planet's most breathtaking woman." This Year Lopez ended her 7-year marriage to Latin singer, Marc Anthony.

None of the previous American Idol judges has passed totally into anonymity. Since her times as an America Idol judge, Paula Abdul has jumped from one project to another. In '09, she hosted VH1 Divas Live, where she performed one of her popular songs. Abdul appeared in '09 and 2010 as the repeating character of Judge Paula on Lifetime's comedy tv show, Drop Dead Diva, and this year, she launched a dancing competition tv show on CBS referred to as Live To Dance, but it was cancelled after only 7 episodes.

As of 2011, Kara DioGuardi was showing up on a songwriting show on Bravo named Platinum Hit. Ellen DeGeneres carries on hosting her widely distributed day time talk show, Ellen, introduced in 2003. DeGeneres is also a representative for Cover Girl makeup, and a music producer for her own label, called "eleveneleven".

Simon Cowell continues his job as a song producer and talent scout, and is currently producing a talent show on FOX named the X Factor. An Apr 2011 press statement stated that Paula Abdul will appear as a judge on Cowell's show, getting the ring of American Idol judges back around to full circle.
