American Home Furniture Defined - Mixing Ancient And Modern

By:

Every country has it's own unique style of furniture for the home, which reflects the different cultures alive in that land. American folk-lore is rich in the spirit of the pioneer, and many furniture styles reflect this culture. In the early pioneering times, comforts were not too evident. Pioneers were a tough stock and patiently built a life a life in the beautiful wilderness. Once the house was put up, it began to accumulate the comforts desired by industrious settlers. The American inheritance includes the wonderful old furniture styles from diverse parts of the country, which presents a vast selection for the careful buyer.

The first conception for American home furniture builders was strength and durability. A great variety of gorgeous woods were in great abundance throughout the States, and furniture builders soon started to the natural strength and attractiveness of the elm, walnut and oak. Other woods used include Cedar and Hickory, and these are still firm favorites for the modern consumer. The furniture should do what it's designed to do, but is also an important part of the way we live, so needs to be good to behold and comfortable to use.

Anitique Kitchen Furniture

The kitchen can be the heart of the home. If you have an existing large kitchen, a bit of design, planning and creativity can produce a really comfortable space for everyone to cook in. There are several choices to be made, for example about the furniture you'd like to install - why not antique kitchen furniture? Too many people settle for fitted kitchen fitments sold as a whole kitchen installation. Even though these may be made of oak or walnut, it's common to have the uncomfortable feeling that your furniture is identical to many other kitchens out there.

We could bypass this somewhat by introducing some free standing pieces, in order to individualize it a little. Another possibility is to acquire bespoke cabinets for fixing to the wall - after all, we have to have the space and wall cabinets make perfect sense - and look for antique kitchen furniture to arrange around the floor space. Most the fun is in finding the antiques. There are great bargains to be had in neighborhood markets and yard sales. Hang some ancient iron pans from the ceiling, install a wood burning stove and you'll have a unique kitchen.

A wooden floor really sets off any home. Wood is very lasting and it's not unexpected that early home builders employed the most durable and attractive varieties for the floors of their houses. There's nothing nicer than a highly burnished Walnut or Oak floor. If you have all concrete floors, then you could fit a false floor raised just an inch or two off the concrete on wooden battens. The boarding may also be Pine or Oak, or another wood of your choice, depending on the depth of your pockets!

Another way is for the house builder to lay a wooden floor using large boards made of either ply, or another kind of amalgamate board. Basically, small fragments of sawdust or wood pulp are blended with glue and compressed under many tons of force and then quick dried. This kind of floor board is perfect for laying carpets, as for a concrete floor, but it's additionally possible to lay wood effect squares, which are quick and simple. Some systems 'float' on the original floor and just 'click' together, so adhesive is not necessary.
