Hey Everybody! After a long time I am once again here talking about the famous places at Jaipur. My last article was about Hawa Mahal (Hawa Mahal The Palace of Winds"). As I promised to introduce you to all the famous places at Jaipur, this time I bring you the story about Amer Fort.

Amer Fort, lies in Aravali hills, is one of the most beautiful forts that surround Jaipur. It is situated at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur (capital of Rajasthan). It was the ancient fortress of the ruling Kachhawa tribe of Amber. Its construction begun in 1590 by Maharaja Man Singh later on renovated in 1724 by Jai Singh
to use it as residence of Royal Family of Jaipur.

This fort is a unique artistic blend of both Hindu and Mughal elements. The fort borders the Maotha Lake and is a major tourist attraction in Rajasthan.

Structure
Amber Fort used to be the palace compound within the original fort of Amber (known as Jaigarh Fort) it is still connected to amber fort through fortified passages. It is built in red sand stone and white marble that makes it a classic combination of Mughal and Hindu architecture. The crystal mirror image of the Amer Fort on the still water of Maotha Lake, creates a beautiful illusion.

Lets divide the fort in the following parts: There are two ways to reach the fort. Either you chose large staircases from a central location or a broad pathway both will lead you to Jaleb Chawk.

Jaleb Chawk: The main entrance gate of Amber Fort is Surajpol that leads to the Jaleb chowk. This is main courtyard of the Fort. In ancient times Jaleb Chowk was the area where returning armies from the war used to be welcomed.
Shila Mata Temple: Just prior to the palace entrance to the right hand side there is a narrow staircase leading to the Shila Devi Temple (also known as Kali Temple). This is famous for its giant silver lions and silver doors with raised relief. This is the symbol of victory of Maharaja Man Singh over the rulers of Bengal.

Diwan-E-Aam: There is a way up-stairs from Jaleb Chowk to Diwan-E-Aam. This is the second courtyard to be seen, a Hall of Public Audience, followed by the intricately painted double-storied Ganesh Pol gate. In this hall, the king used to receive his public, listen to their problems and provide solutions. The hall has a series of pillared corridors and porch having elephant shaped columns.

Charbagh: The next is Charbagh garden which is surrounded on one side by Sukh Niwas and another by Jai Mandir. This is a very beautiful garden based on Mughal pattern of gardens.

Sukh Niwas: The doors of Sukh Niwas were made of sandalwood, inlaid with ivory with a channel running through, which formerly carried cool water working as an air cooler. This is the best example of air cooling system of that time.
Jai Mandir: That means Hall of Victory. It has a dazzling mirror ceiling with exquisite mirror work on binding and stylish inlaid panel. It is amongst the residential apartments of the Maharaja.

Janana: This is the palace for royal women. For their privacy a common corridor connects all the rooms of the palace.

Diwan-E-Khas: The meaning of Diwan-E-Khas is a hall of private or selective audience. Its ornamentation is similar to Jai-Mandir. This was the place for all the political and administrational issues to be discussed.

Sheesh Mahal: Next beautiful creation is Sheesh Mahal (House of Mirrors). It is known for its amazing craftsmanship in mirrors. Many pieces of mirror prettify the walls and the ceiling in a way that any streak of light makes them flicker and enlighten the entire room. You can try this by closing the gates of the Sheesh Mahal and lit any torch or match stick. You will be amazed by the miracle in front of your eyes.

Kesar Kyari: This is the best example of well laid out and well-proportioned garden. This garden is in the center of Maotha Lake and provides a magnificent view of the palace. Kesar Kyari Garden is the venue for the light and sound show organized by the RTDC (Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation). This also involves a script of 45 minutes that has been written by Gulzar and narrated by Amitabh Bachan. This is the most entertaining happening of Amer visit.

This all is about Amer Fort, Jaipur, India. Till the end of this article, you might have made your mind to visit Jaipur. Whenever you plan to visit here dont forget to have a great experience of seeing this beautiful heritage building. Have a nice journey.
