Amending Your Soil Correctly

By:

At the base of everything is soil, roots sink deep into the earth to provide stability to the plant, but the roots are only as strong as the soil that they are sunk in. Getting the most out of your soil is going to give you the most out of your garden.

With any soil you are going to need these three nutrients to make it healthy: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. The nitrogen is going to give the plants healthy stem and leaf growth, and therefor is essential if you want to have plants that look pretty.

Phosphorous is going to provide great root development. Roots in plants are where they absorb all their nutrients, so if you do not have good roots then the whole plant is being ruined because it simply cannot get the nutrients I needs.

Potassium is going to provide equal overall health. It is the third main ingredient in any soil, and even though it doesn't direct a specific part of the flower it is very important to incorporate because your plants will not grow without it.

Other nutrients that are going to help your plant grow would be calcium, zinc, magnesium, and molybdenum. All of these nutrients will cause good plant growth but they are not absolutely necessary, so do not worry about going out and buying some crazy mixture of soil.

After you have the key components for your soil, you have to make sure that the texture of the soil is going to be fitting for the plants that you intend to grow. There is a variety of different textures in soils, ranging from sand to clay.

Sand has very big particles that allow for the plant to move freely. This can be a problem when the plant isn't provided with enough stability.

On the other end of the texture spectrum is clay, this is a soil with particles so small and compact there is little room for anything. It can even be hard to get a shovel to move through this stuff.

What you want to do is get a soil that is easy played with in the hands and fast draining. Get some soil that is loamy and will hold water for a good amount of time, so that your plants can drink whenever they desire.

Apart from texture and nutrients getting some organic matter in the garden is going to help a lot too. This can be dog droppings, old leaves, decomposing critters, Indians used fish guts and bones and that worked great, whatever you want to use so long as it is organic.
