Amazon Takes A Bite Out Of Apple

While Amazon is waiting to release their version of an iPad-like device, they have opened a new Mac Download Store. MacBook, iMac and Mac Pro users can download 250 of Mac OSs biggest applications, some of which arent available in Apples own App Store. For example, you can buy the Microsoft Office Home and Student version at Amazons store and not through Apples store.

Apple wont take this lying down. You can bet Apple will start one of their famous or should I say infamous law suits. When Amazon launched its Appstore for Android, Apple filed suit to block it, saying in a court filing that the online retailer is improperly using Apples APP STORE trademark. Amazon countered with the argument that appstore is a generic term. This time Amazon left out the word App from the name of the store. Wonder what Apple will site this time.

Amazon is quoted as saying, Mac Download store features an install-less download process where the customer gets just the product without any unwanted extras, making for faster and easier purchases. Plus, downloads are conveniently backed up in your Games and Software Library where you can download an unlimited number of times for personal use. I think what they are saying is that you dont have to have iTunes to download anything. Amazon is known for its seamless download methods. If you dont want iTunes installed on your computer, you are out of luck in trying to use the Apple store.

This is just the first shot across the bow from Amazon. When Amazon debuts its iPad-like device, probably the Android Kindle, a major blow will be aimed at Apple. I have a Kindle 2 and love it. I would like to get one of the new Kindle 3 devices with the better contrast and battery, but I am going to wait to see what the Android Kindle offers. My son has an iPad and loves it now, but didnt think too much of it until he got the case with the built in Bluetooth keyboard. I will be looking for a similar case for the Android Kindle when it comes out.
