Am I Going To Have To Pay A Fuel Surcharge

By:

Keeping costs down is something that anyone shipping with a courier company is always worrying about. When you're shipping with a Chicago courier company you'll always be trying to find the right balance between cost and speed. You'll also probably try and find ways to reduce your costs by shipping LTL, and making sure that you don't incur any needless surcharges such as shipping on a holiday.

There are some of the fees and surcharges which are added to your bill by a courier company which are going to be unavoidable. Something you need to know is that a courier company has to disclose all of those surcharges ahead of time if they are asked about them. So, although it may sound simple, the easiest way to know if you're going to have to pay a fuel surcharge is just to ask someone at the company.

There is another way that you can tell though. The fuel surcharge is only put in place to make sure that the drivers for the courier company continue to make a decent wage. They pay for the fuel in their own vehicles. This means that when the price of fuel begins to skyrocket, as it has several times in the last few years, it can eat up a significant portion of their earnings.

That is why the courier companies put a fuel surcharge in place. The worry was that if driving for a courier company was no longer paying a fair compensation, that all of the high quality drivers would leave and go find jobs that they could make more money at. With a fuel surcharge in place, it helped to retain the profit margin on the earnings of those drivers.

So the easiest way to know if you're going to be assessed a fuel surcharge is to pay close attention to the rising and falling gas prices in your area. If they are going up in a hurry, you can expect to see a surcharge start appearing on your invoices shortly. On the other hand, if you are currently paying a fuel surcharge on your invoice and you notice the gas prices going down, you should make sure that they are removing the fuel surcharge. These are designed to maintain profits for drivers, not bring in extra income to the courier companies, which is why most clients don't mind paying for them as much as certain other surcharges.
