Alternative Nursing Jobs

By:

When you think of nursing jobs, the first thing that pops up in your head is hospitals, wards or ER. However, apart from the usual jobs that nurses undertake, there are also a lot of other jobs that are known as alternative nursing jobs. These may not be even remotely related to working in emergency wards and hospital rooms. As technology advances at an unprecedented rate, the methods through which we are receiving health care are rapidly changing. Computers and other equipment have made it much easier for people to receive healthcare. For instance, if a person is suffering from a minor illness, all he has to do is call a helpline and get an idea of the kind of illness he is going through.

The internet is also a great source of searching for symptoms and diagnosing yourself with the right illness. These websites are updated and maintained by healthcare professionals and the telephone lines also need sufficiently knowledgeable and experienced health professionals. If you are tired of the traditional hospital care, you should definitely go for telephone or online consultancy. Although you will still be in contact with a lot of patients, this contact will mostly be limited to the phone or internet, and you will be more actively involved in diagnosis. This is a great way to gain some more knowledge about various branches of healthcare.

On the other hand, if you wish to go for alternative nursing jobs that involve working in a hospital, you could become a travel nurse. The job of travel nurses differs from that of other nurses in that they are sent to various hospitals and health facilities where there is a shortage of health professionals and the demand is very high. You get paid a lot for these jobs, and also the opportunity to work in different institutions and come in contact with a variety of patients. Another name used to refer to travel nurses is locum nurses, mainly because they fulfill the shortage of nurses. An alternative job also includes alternative therapies such as chiropractors, reflexology and herbalist. All of these involve patient care outside of hospital vicinity.

If you wish to go for alternative nursing jobs but still stay in contact with patients, nutrition is a good option. The demand for nutritionists has shown an upward trend in recent years mainly due to the growing health problems faced by many people. You will have to deal with patients suffering from a wide variety of nutritional issues, ranging from eating disorders to chronic obesity. Nutrition is a significant component of medicine, and has made a great deal of contributions to health. Hence, it is considered to be a great option as an alternative nursing career.
