Alternative Medicine What Is It?

Alternative Medicine What Is It?

By:

For as long as one can remember, there has been a division between the type of medicine practiced in the West and that in the East. The last ten years, however, has seen this change.

Eastern medical practices have started to become more accepted and used in the West. The once far fetched idea of using meditation, herbs and other alternative health approaches no longer is laughed at.

As a whole, these newly introduced medicinal techniques are called alternative medicine. You might be surprised to learn, however, that there is much dispute about this categorization.

One group of medical scientists takes the view that anything not originating in the west is an alternative medicine. They view the grab bag as a hodge podge of questionable approaches and discount them.

On the other side of the ledger are medical professionals who mock the alternative title. They suggest a medical approach must be evidence driven. It either works or it does not. If it works, than it is part of mainstream medicine regardless of where it came from.

Obviously, these approaches are very distinct and not easily meshed. In fact, there is no plurality regarding which one is right. In truth, it doesn't seem to matter to many patients if you look at the statistics.

In the United States, adults are turning towards alternative medicine. More than 50 percent have used some form of it, a number that makes one wonder if it can be called alternative any longer.

A majority of adults do not forgo Western style medicine when using alternative medical approaches. Instead, they use them to compliment each other.

While alternative approaches are more accepted, the acceptance is limited to certain areas. The most popular alternative medications and treatments are in areas where re-occurring pain is a problem.

People prefer to self-medicate with alternative medicinal approaches. Less than twenty percent will consult with a licensed practitioner.

Women are far more likely to use alternative health options than men. No particular reason is known, but the biggest disparity seems to be in treatments that combine a mind-body element.

How we define medicine and where medicinal approaches come from seems to be somewhat irrelevant to most people. The question is whether the gain benefits from it. Given the rise in use, it would seem alternative medicinal approaches are here to stay.
