Alternative Fuels Are Staying

By:

Development of alternative fuels have become one of the hottest innovations in the auto industry. There are scientists who are working diligently to make sources of fuel that are clean and safe for the environment. Recent developments have resulted in fuels that not only burn clean but offers an advantage to car owners.

Of all of the alternative fuels, the most well-known is ethanol. The other name is grain alcohol since it is produced from corn or soybeans. You may find at the gas station something called E85 which is a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. People who use E85 find that they get better gas mileage and feels that the fuel is burning cleaner than regular gasoline. Even though there is gasoline in E85, it still burns much cleaner. Plant material left from logging, and trash including paper, can be used to make ethanol, and so can other organic materials, such as agricultural crops and wastes. Methanol is another type of product that is similar to ethanol and can be used as alternative fuel.

Methanol can be made out of biomass resources, such as wood and coal, and is known as wood alcohol. Today, creating methanol is inexpensive since it can be made from natural gas or propane. Propane, or compressed natural gas, is common in many homes but has been gaining traction for fueling cars. Similar to oil, natural gas is extracted from the earth. Propane is not a liquid but a true gas like air. Since it is such an environmentallyfriendly fuel, natural gas has been growing in popularity. Another fuel that has gained popularity is electricity.

Due to environmental concerns, electric vehicles are coming back in popularity, even though they have been around for a long time. An electric car uses electricity stored in batteries, rather than burning gasoline in an engine. It can take anywhere from 12 to 24 batteries to power an electric car. An alternative fuel that shows a lot of promise is hydrogen. Right now it is in the experimental stages but it has a lot of potential. The advantages of hydrogen are that it is easy to produce and it is very light. It is expected that hydrogen will be the next big thing for powering vehicles.

There are many types of alternative fuels, and these were only a few. As people become more concerned with global warming, efforts will be made to develop better alternative fuels. As it continues to grow in popularity, every alternative fuel will continue to improve and make the world a better place.
